China is a mysterious, exotic country that is the backbone of Asia. Because of this, it’s a popular tourist destination, especially since travel costs here are less than in other parts of the world, such as Europe or the United States. China holidays are increasing in popularity each year with so much to see and do, why wouldn’t you want to go!
The Middle Kingdom has much to offer visitors: mountains, scenic lakes, tropical forests and beaches, and cities, ranging from small villages where time has stood still to the rapidly modernizing metropolises of Beijing and Shanghai.
And let’s not forget the country’s rich history. China is home to Peking Man. It’s where gunpowder was invented. China is a country which considers its history and culture started 5,000 years ago. It is a country with a heritage so rich, UNESCO has placed more than three dozen sites throughout the country on its World Heritage List.
The major tourist cities, especially for first-time visitors, are the capital Beijing, home of the Forbidden City with easy access to the Great Wall; Xi’an with its famous Terra Cotta Warriors, and Shanghai, the city’s financial capital. As travellers become more accustomed to traveling in China, they branch out to other locations, such as Sichuan Province, home of the pandas; Kashgar, with its famous Sunday camel market; and Hainan Island, China’s answer to Hawaii.
China is a destination for all seasons, but temperatures are warmer in the south during the winter.
The unit of currency is the “renminbi,” which means “people’s money.” It’s also known as the “yuan” or “kuai” in street slang.
