Macau is a special administrative region of China, which gained popularity as Asia’s foremost destination for gambling, high-end shopping, and entertainment. Located at the banks of the Pearl River in Guangdong province, Macau melds Eastern and Western influences, creating a mix that is truly unique in Asia enjoyed by many on their Macau holidays. Macau used to be a territory of Portugal until the latter part of the 20th century. Traces of its colonial history can be found in every corner of the region.
Macau is currently divided into four island districts, which consists of the Macau Peninsula, Taipa, Coloane, and Cotai. Most visitors gravitate towards the Macau Peninsula, an area that has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved structures of historical significance. Several churches built during Macau’s colonial history can be found in this heritage site.
The Senate Square or the Largo do Senado, which is located at the center of the district, is surrounded by Spanish and Portuguese inspired structures. The Taipa and Coloane island districts are also famous for its temples, parks, and heritage sites.
The Cotai Strip is a reclaimed area connected to Taipa and Coloane districts. This area has several theme parks, resorts, hotels, and casinos. Mirroring the Las Vegas Strip in terms of entertainment and gambling options, it has several world-class establishments including the Venetian Resort, Four Seasons, and the City of Dreams.
Macau uses the Pataca as its official currency. However, the Hong Kong Dollar and other foreign currencies are also acceptable in major establishments. The climatic condition of the city is sub- tropical, with humid or dry summers and variances in rain patterns.
