Shanghai is China’s biggest city and financial capital of the country, but it’s also much more than that. Perhaps the most modern city in China, with highly innovative architecture in its Pudong district, it still retains traces of a proud past that you can experience for yourself on Shanghai holidays.

Today, tourists still stroll along The Bund on the banks of the Huangpu River just as they did 100 years ago. They still shop on the famous Nanjing Road, though the shops are more considerably upscale than they were a century ago. However, walk a block or two away from Nanjing Road and you’ll find Chinese selling veggies from tarps laid on the sidewalks in narrow alleys.

Any visit to Shanghai is not complete until you’ve visited the Shanghai Museum on People’s Square. It is considered one of the best museums in China with thousands of Chinese artifacts on display. Admission is free, but you’ll pay a few “renminbi” to visit other attractions. Renminbi is China’s unit of money, and is usually called a “yuan.”

Shanghai is one of the Big Three cities in China that almost every tour includes. The others are Beijing and Xi’an. However, you don’t need a tour to visit Shanghai, which has an efficient public transportation system making it easy to get around on your own. Any time is a good time to visit Shanghai. It can get cold in the winter, but not as cold as Beijing or Xi’an.
